Ia bersempadan dengan <a href=\"http:\/\/worldclock.com\/africa\/sudan\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Sudan<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/worldclock.com\/africa\/ethiopia\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Ethiopia<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/worldclock.com\/africa\/uganda\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Uganda<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/worldclock.com\/africa\/kenya\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Kenya<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/worldclock.com\/africa\/democratic-republic-of-the-congo\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Republik Demokratik Congo<\/a> dan <a href=\"http:\/\/worldclock.com\/africa\/central-african-republic\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Republik Afrika Tengah<\/a>. Ibu negaranya ialah <a href=\"https:\/\/www.worldclock.com\/africa\/south-sudan\/time-in-juba\/\">Juba<\/a>. Walaupun keputusan itu dicapai secara aman selepas lebih 50 tahun konflik etnik dan agama, Sudan Selatan mengalami pergolakan dalaman yang besar sejak pengisytiharan kemerdekaannya dan setakat 2016 mencatatkan skor kedua tertinggi dalam Indeks Negara Rapuh.
