Tussen 1916 en 1924 werd het land bezet door de <a href=\"http:\/\/worldclock.com\/north-america\/united-states-of-america\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Verenigde Staten<\/a>. In 1930 kwam een wrede dictator, Rafael Trujillo genaamd, via een staatsgreep aan de macht. Tijdens zijn presidentschap liet hij duizenden mensen vermoorden. Trujillo werd in 1961 vermoord.
