Formerly a breakaway region of Sudan, it became an independent country on 9 July 2011 after a referendum, passed with the staggering majority, which was held in January that year. It borders <a href=\"http:\/\/worldclock.com\/africa\/sudan\/\">Sudan<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/worldclock.com\/africa\/ethiopia\/\">Ethiopia<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/worldclock.com\/africa\/uganda\/\">Uganda<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/worldclock.com\/africa\/kenya\/\">Kenya<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/worldclock.com\/africa\/democratic-republic-of-the-congo\/\">Democratic Republic of the Congo<\/a>, and the <a href=\"http:\/\/worldclock.com\/africa\/central-african-republic\/\">Central African Republic<\/a>.
