The Buddhist Era (B.E.)
The Buddhist Era counts years from the Buddha’s passing (parinirvana). In Thailand it is the official calendar: you will see it on documents, newspapers, banknotes and expiry dates. To convert, simply add 543 to the Western year – 2026 A.D. is 2569 B.E. – or subtract 543 to go back. Since 1941 the Thai year begins on 1 January, like the Gregorian calendar.
Cambodia, Laos, Myanmar and Sri Lanka use the Buddhist Era for religious dates, but often count one year more (add 544) and start the year in April or May, so their year can differ by one from the Thai B.E.
Frequently asked questions
What year is it in the Buddhist calendar?
In Thailand, 2026 A.D. is the year 2569 B.E. (Buddhist Era).
How do I convert B.E. to A.D.?
Subtract 543 from the Buddhist Era year. For example 2570 B.E. − 543 = 2027 A.D.
Why is the Thai year 543 years ahead?
The Buddhist Era starts in 543 B.C., the traditional year of the Buddha’s death in Thai tradition, so its year numbers are 543 higher.
