About daylight saving time
Daylight saving time (DST, or “summer time”) moves clocks forward by one hour in spring so evenings stay light for longer, then back again in autumn. Roughly 70 countries still use it. The USA and Canada change on the second Sunday of March and the first Sunday of November, the European Union on the last Sunday of March and October, and countries in the southern hemisphere – such as Australia, New Zealand, Chile and Paraguay – do the opposite, putting their clocks forward in September or October.
Most of Asia, Africa and South America don’t change their clocks at all. The dates above are calculated from the official IANA time zone database and update automatically every day. Read more in our guide to daylight saving time.
