About Almaty
Almaty is Kazakhstan's largest city and its leading financial and business centre, although the national capital is Astana. Set beneath the snow-capped Trans-Ili Alatau mountains, it is known for its green avenues, the nearby Medeu skating rink and Shymbulak ski resort, and its role as a commercial hub for Central Asia.
Kazakhstan moved the whole country onto a single time zone in 2024, and Almaty now runs on UTC+5 all year, with no daylight saving. Older references may still show UTC+6 for the city, so it is worth double-checking any schedules. Almaty is now on the same clock as Tashkent and Karachi.
