Frequently asked questions
Which countries don’t observe daylight saving time?
Most of Africa and Asia, including China, Japan, India, Indonesia and the Gulf states, plus most of South America and the Pacific, do not change their clocks. Since 2010 several large countries have stopped as well: Russia (2011), Turkey (2016), Brazil (2019) and most of Mexico (2022).
How many countries use daylight saving time?
Around 69 countries and territories change their clocks at least in part of their territory – mainly in Europe, North America, parts of the Middle East, and southern Australia, New Zealand and Chile in the southern hemisphere.
Why don’t countries near the equator use daylight saving time?
Near the equator the length of the day hardly changes through the year, so moving the clocks gains no extra evening daylight. Daylight saving time mainly makes sense at higher latitudes, where summer days are much longer than winter days.
Does all of the United States observe daylight saving time?
No. Hawaii and most of Arizona stay on standard time all year, as do Puerto Rico, Guam, the US Virgin Islands, American Samoa and the Northern Mariana Islands.
